This week meet yet another fascinating personality, veteran actor Ranjit Mallik and his daughter Koel in a candid chat with Rituparno Ghosh
Rituparno Ghosh got the best out of the father-daughter duo of Tollywood; dark confessions and memoirs from the past. Recalling how his father reacted to his acting career in his early days, Ranjit said. "Though my father was a lawyer by profession at the same time he appreciated theatre. But still he did not quite approve of my choosing acting as a career ;he was perhaps apprehensive."
It was deja vu, recounted Ranjit when Koel decided to join films. "I was quite unsure as whether Koel will be able to shoulder the responsibility of an actor as the investments in films are quite high. While Koel was shooting for her debut film, I used to often call up the director Haranath Chakraborty and tell him to pull out Koel if she was under performing".
Reminiscing her childhood memories, Koel said, "When I was a kid, I used to trace my father by the fragrance of his Eau de Cologne. I could understand that he was a famous person ; I was clueless about his profession".
But the topic that struck the chord was the Bengali culture. Ranjit confessed that today's Bengali cinema lacks the touch of Bengali culture whereas the culture of a region should be the quintessence of the art. Rituparno agreed to Ranjit with wholeheartedness and said that Ranjit Mallik is so respected in the tollywood fraternity because of his this bangaliana. Rituparno very affectionately pointed out to Koel that "No one would light a cigarette when your father is around".
